The Collagen Detour
The Collagen
Detour.
What happens to collagen when you drink it — and what actually reaches your skin.
The global collagen supplement market is worth over $8 billion. A large share of the trials cited in its marketing were funded by the brands selling it. Here's what the independent research actually shows.
Your digestion comes first.
When you ingest collagen — powder, drink, gummy, capsule — your digestive system treats it like any other protein. It breaks it down into amino acids and short peptides before anything enters your bloodstream.
Those fragments don't carry a label that says "send to face." Your body distributes them according to its own priorities: muscle repair, organ function, immune response. Your skin sits low on that list.
Many of the clinical trials collagen brands cite share one thing: they were funded by the brands themselves. Independent research does exist, and some of it reports modest effects on skin hydration and elasticity — but results are inconsistent, sample sizes are small, and the effect is far from the transformation the marketing promises. The terms "tripeptide" and "hydrolyzed" suggest special delivery; digestion still happens either way.
What you were told. What is true.
The supplement industry relies on conflating two very different things: collagen as a nutrient, and collagen as a skin treatment. Here's the breakdown.
What actually builds and protects your collagen.
Four habits. No supplements required.

①
Topical Vitamin C — the co-factor your skin can't work without.
Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis: your fibroblasts cannot produce collagen without it. Applied on the skin, it reaches the dermis directly, with no digestive detour.
On concentration — the part most guides get wrong. Higher is not automatically better. Pure L-Ascorbic Acid is the most studied form and is typically used at 10–20%, but it is unstable, oxidises quickly, and is poorly tolerated by reactive skin. Stabilized derivatives behave differently: paired with Ferulic Acid, which extends stability and supports antioxidant activity, they work at lower concentrations. What matters is the form, the stability of the formula, and whether your skin tolerates it well enough to use it every day. A 20% serum you abandon after a week does nothing.

②
Glycine-rich foods — the real collagen precursor.
If you want to support collagen through nutrition, eat glycine — the primary amino acid your body uses to build collagen. Abundant in eggs, bone broth, legumes, and fish skin. This is not the same as eating collagen. You are providing the raw material and letting your body allocate it where it's needed.

③
SPF — the most underrated collagen strategy.
UV radiation is the single biggest driver of collagen degradation, and photoaging accounts for the large majority of visible skin aging. No supplement compensates for daily unprotected exposure. A mineral SPF applied every morning preserves more collagen than anything you can swallow.
The practical problem is consistency: most people skip SPF because it feels like an extra step. The fix is to stop treating it as one — our C5 Ceramide CC Complexion Stick carries SPF 30 inside the complexion step, so protection happens whether or not you remembered to think about it.

④
Barrier-first skincare — protect what you already have.
A compromised skin barrier keeps your skin in a constant low-level inflammatory state — and chronic inflammation accelerates collagen breakdown. Ceramide-like lipids (Glycosphingolipids), plant oils rich in Omega fatty acids, and stable antioxidants like Tocopherol create the conditions where collagen degradation slows and repair can happen.

The practical collagen protocol.
Two moments. No supplements.
- Water only. No cleanser. You cleansed last night — washing again strips a barrier that spent the night repairing itself.
- Reset C-Booster — Vitamin C on bare skin
- C5 Complexion Stick — SPF 30 and complexion in one step
- Hydra Cleansing Oil-To-Milk — dissolves SPF without stripping
- Hydra Serum — hydration before occlusion
- Reset Night Cream — barrier repair overnight
- No aggressive actives every night. Repair needs quiet.
Collagen powders, gummies and drinks are the most expensive part of most routines and the least supported by independent evidence. A daily SPF and a Vitamin C serum you actually tolerate will do more for your collagen over time — and cost less.

Hydra Cleansing Oil to Milk.
Glycolipids and Sea Buckthorn Fruit Extract preserve your lipid barrier during cleansing. No stripping. No inflammation. The first step in any collagen-protection routine.
